WHAT ARE THE MOST EXPENSIVE FOSSILS EVER SOLD?
1.Stan ($31.8 million) — The Tyrannosaurus rex fossil, which included about 70% of a skeleton and a completed skull, was sold by Christie's auction house to the state of Abu Dhabi in 2020 and is expected to be displayed at a new museum of natural history starting in 2025.
2.Sue ($8.36 million, or $16.22 million today) — The most complete Tyrannosaurus rex ever found, and the first dinosaur ever sold at auction, was named Sue after the paleontologist who discovered her and sold to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago in 1997 by Sotheby’s.
3.Hector ($12.4 million) — A fossil of a deinonychus, the species on which "Jurassic Park" based its cinematic velociraptors, blew sales estimates out of the water in 2022 when it sold to an undisclosed buyer for more than twice its estimated value of $4 million to $6 million (it was later displayed at the Natural History Museum of Denmark).
4.Big John ($7.7 million) —The largest triceratops fossil ever found was sold to an anonymous private collector in Paris in 2021, and is now on display at Glazer Children's Museum in Tampa.
5.TRX-293 Trinity ($6.13 million) — A composite skeleton of bones from three different Tyrannosaurus rex discoveries sold in Zurich last year to a private buyer.
6.Unnamed gorgosaurus ($6.1 million) — A partial skeleton of a close relative to the Tyrannosaurus rex that measured 22 feet long and nine feet tall sold in 2022 to an anonymous buyer.
7.Maximus ($6.1 million) — The most complete and well preserved T-rex skull ever found wildly missed its sales estimate of $15 million to $20 million when it was sold to an anonymous buyer in 2022 (the skull was 75% complete and weighed approximately 160.25 pounds).
